Folding Laundry

Folding Laundry

Learning to process Laundry is a skill that will give your ASD teen tools for independent living. Every child with Autism is different and appropriate chores are best determined by family and your educational team assessing the needs and skill level of the individual involved. Folding laundry is a great skill that can really help around the house. My son Ian has recently learned to fold laundry and is progressively getting better and more efficient at it. When teaching Ian to fold laundry, as with every new skill, we break down the task into small manageable steps. Here is what it looks like:

1. Get clothes out of laundry hamper and sort lights and darks.
2. Put a load in the washer
3. Add laundry detergent
4. Turn on washer
5. When washer is done put in dryer
6. Turn on dryer
7. When drying cycle is done pull out dry clean clothes and put on couch
8. Sit and fold clothes
